Finding your perfect artwork
When choosing a piece of art, ensure the masterpiece in question is in the public domain, or that you have the artist’s express permission to use the image. When searching for historical artworks, museums and public collections are a great place to begin your search.
Here are a few great collections to get you started:
Rijksmuseum’s Rijksstudio
Dive into thousands of high-resolution images of artworks from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Many of these are in the public domain and available for download and creative use. You can even create an account and save the images!
Google Arts & Culture
This platform offers an expansive collection of artworks from museums around the world. You can search for artworks by filter settings that include usage rights, allowing you to discover pieces that are in the public domain.
Wikimedia Commons
A massive repository of images, including historical artworks that are in the public domain. Each image typically comes with detailed information about its copyright status.
Library of Congress
This U.S. institution offers a vast array of historical photographs, documents, and artworks. Many of these items are in the public domain, particularly those created before 1924.

Are there any limitations to which artworks I can choose for my masterpiece?
In addition to the restrictions covered on this page, special circumstances may apply. Limitations commonly include:

| The style is difficult to replicate within the usual time-frame | We’ll provide an estimate of additional time needed to replicate complex styles. |
Is there a policy for handling requests that might involve culturally sensitive themes?
To ensure respect and sensitivity, Be A Muse does not use artworks or artists associated with cultural insensitivity or historical controversy.
How much can I customize my chosen artwork?
Be A Muse offers free basic customization. This can include:
- Changing colors of features such as clothing.
- Minor adjustments of a subject’s figure.
- Removing small background elements or minor characters.
- Modifying gender presentation by adding or removing certain features.
Be sure to make any alteration requests when submitting your photos for approval. If a request requires significant extra time, we’ll inform you of any limitations and provide a flat rate (usually $10–20) for your approval before proceeding.
What do I need to provide verification that an artist has given me permission to use their artwork?
Please provide a written agreement or license from the artist, detailing their consent, usage scope, and any terms. Include the artist’s email so we can confirm the details directly with them.

When sending us your references, there are five main points to keep in mind:
Match the position of your head and shoulders to those in the painting.
Aim for soft, even lighting.
Frame yourself with some space around your head and shoulders.
Aim for minimal accessories and keep your hair out of your face.
Send a few photos* with slight angle changes.
*Maximum five images, please!

How does the approval process work?
After you place an order, you’ll upload your reference images (photos of you) to our portal. We’ll compare your images with the masterpiece you’ve chosen and let you know if we’re good to go or if we need something more. Once we have everything we need, we’ll let you know and then get straight to work!

What are some common issues with submitted photos?
Generally, following the guidelines for your reference images will ensure speedy approval. Occasionally, we will require additional images. Here are some common reasons for delays in approval:

| Low-quality images | Retake in better lighting or with a better camera. Daytime photos with indirect sunlight often work best. |
The images are too small | Use high-resolution images directly from the camera. Avoid resizing or cropping. |
| Issues with image elements (like makeup) | Who are we to judge? After all, Mona Lisa looks great with that cat eye! If a mismatch is identified, we’ll provide feedback. You can either proceed or submit new images. |
| Poses not matching | We’ll guide you to better align your pose with the original artwork. |
What can I expect Be A Muse to adjust when creating my artwork?
When personalizing an artwork, Be A Muse typically customizes:
- Facial features to match the provided references.
- Small hairstyle adjustments based on the original piece.
- Skin tone changes, with extra approval needed for significant adjustments, like adjusting a pale subject to match a deeper skin tone.

Once you have your reference photos and your masterpiece, you’re ready to submit! Visit the Gift Shop, pick your package, and share your images with us. We’ll respond to you once we’ve received your assets, and let you know if we need any additional references. Otherwise, we’ll get straight to work!
You can track the progress of your order, and we’ll reach out once we’ve finished for your approval before sending your finished piece out into the world. Once you’re satisfied, it’s off to the printers, and time to start planning your grand art debut as the final piece makes the way home — to you!

Common questions
What do I receive when I order digital images?
Downloadable digital artworks are provided at high resolution (300 DPI) in a lossless .PNG format. We also include smaller web-friendly versions at 72 DPI in .JPG format.
How long does the entire process take, from placing an order to receiving the finished art?
After placing your order, you’ll upload your reference images. We review these within 48 hours and let you know if we need more. Once approved, creating your artwork takes 7-14 days, depending on complexity. After completion, we’ll seek your feedback and make any requested adjustments within three days. You’ll then receive the high-resolution digital piece along with tracking info for any prints. Shipping typically takes 3-5 business days.
