public domain
What is public domain and how does it work?
Public domain includes creative works like books, music, and art that are no longer under copyright. This happens when copyrights expire, are waived, or the works were published before modern copyright laws. Once in the public domain, anyone can use these works freely without needing permission or payment.
Paintings published before 1929 are all fair game, but some works published after this may be available as well. Wikipedia is a great resource for quickly checking the status of well-known works that have their own entries. The Hirtle Chart can be used to determine the status of a variety of creative works of art, including musical and architectural pieces in addition to fine artworks.
Feel free to reach out to us if you find a something you like and need help verifying it's copyright status.
You can use public domain works for your own projects, too! While business-related correspondences take priority, we answer every email we get, and we're always happy to answer questions from the curious, and our fellow creatives!
What do I need to provide verification that an artist outside of Public Domain has given me permission to use their artwork for my Be A Muse Masterpiece?
Please provide a written agreement or license from the artist, detailing their consent, usage scope, and any terms. Include the artist's email so we can confirm the details directly with them.
